Cycling to Hesperus? Tough going right now

Repaving project puts space at a premium

Bicyclists are being warned to prepare for a less than “Colorful Colorado” experience during a repaving project on U.S. Highway 160.

A contractor for the Colorado Department of Transportation is resurfacing a 10-mile stretch between Durango and Hesperus. Until paving is complete – likely in mid-October – cycling through the area will be difficult, CDOT said.

Shoulders in the moving three-mile work zone will be closed. That leaves cyclists to contend with vehicle traffic in the 40 mph zone, the agency said.

The affected area is from milepost 71 to milepost 81.3, from just west of Durango to Hesperus.

The $4.9 million project involves patching damaged areas, applying a 1-inch layer of asphalt to smooth the roadway, then adding a 2-inch asphalt overlay. Guardrails also will be upgraded.

For drivers, traffic will be down to one lane from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday until the project’s completion in mid-October. With speeds reduced to 40 mph, motorists should expect minor delays, CDOT said.
