Entrepreneurs, investors to meet up

The La Plata Economic Development Alliance has partnered with the New Mexico Angels and will be hosting an Angel Investment Dinner at 5:15 p.m. Aug. 1 at Durango Mountain Resort.

The event is designed to bring entrepreneurs and angel investors together to fund start-up companies in the region, according to a news release issued by the La Plata Economic Development Alliance.

Over the past few years the New Mexico Angels have been hearing pitches from companies in Northeast New Mexico and Southwest Colorado who are looking for a different kind of funding.

The New Mexico Angels is a private membership organization of investors who invest jointly in start-up companies.

“We believe in the power of angel investing and the potential of small businesses in southern Colorado who might need this type of capital,” said New Mexico Angels’ President John Chavez in the release. “Angel funding is more than just capital. We invest our personal dollars in exchange for equity, while providing the company with advice and coaching from our industry experts to help accelerate them to market leadership.”

Chavez will be co-hosting the event.

The partnership came out of a desire from La Plata Economic Development Alliance’s Executive Director Roger Zalneraitis to get more funding options to the area, especially second tier funding for Southwest Colorado Accelerated Program for Entrepreneurs graduates.

Speakers at the event include Chavez and Dorian Rader of New Mexico Angels, Zalneraitis, Ray Hagerman, CEO of Four Corners Economic Development, and Matt Taylor, CEO of Mercury Payment Systems.

The event will spotlight two innovative start-up companies pitching to investors for funding.

Sit-Ins, a Durango-based company, will be presenting on its music education app. EcoPesticides International is an Albuquerque-based company that has created a novel way of treating pests with naturally occurring fungi.

Investors and entrepreneurs alike are invited to attend to network, learn more about angel investing and view the presentations. Visit www.nmangels.com to register and for more information.
