Fire decimates garage in valley

Classic car destroyed but another saved

Firefighters responded Friday afternoon to a fire that destroyed a garage about five miles north of Durango in the Animas Valley.

The blaze was reported at 1:27 p.m. at 31936 U.S. Highway 550, the home of Hermosa residents Leland McDermott and Vi McCoy.

It involved a large detached garage, about 20 feet by 40 feet, said Karola Hanks, fire marshal with Durango Fire Protection District.

By the time firefighters arrived, the garage was fully engulfed, Hanks said.

Firefighters were unable to enter the garage and had to attack it from the outside. Flames were completely knocked down by 2:15 p.m., but firefighters remained at the scene to make sure no embers got into a nearby house.

A woman on the scene said a classic car was destroyed, but she saved another car.

Firefighters were waiting for the garage to cool off before beginning their investigation into the cause of the fire.
