Schreiner trips up Saturday at Green Valley Ranch

DHS alumnus falls from 1st to 11th at the Colorado Open

The lead slipped away from Durangoan Devin Schreiner on Saturday at the Colorado Open.

Schreiner, son of Kipp and Tammy Schreiner, shot an 8-over 79 at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver to fall to 11th place at 4 under for the tournament.

Schreiner, a Durango High School alumnus and former Fort Lewis College golfer, led the tournament after play concluded Thursday and Friday, leading it at 12-under when Saturday’s play started.

He made five bogeys and two double bogeys in the third round after only making one bogey through the first two rounds.

“I had never been in that kind of position before where I had a two-shot lead going into the third round in such a big tournament,” Schreiner said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “I was kind of in uncharted territory. It was a good learning experience for me.”

He made one birdie on the back nine after shooting a 5-over 41 on the front nine.

Par 4 holes hurt Schreiner the most, as he went 5 over on them after shooting 6 under and 2 under Thrusday and Friday, respectively.

Ian Davis of Edmond, Oklahoma, leads at 10 under after shooting a 71 on Saturday. Davis trailed Schreiner by two strokes at the start of the day.

There is one round left in the tournament, which also featured Durangoan Keenan Holt and Cortez golfers Jakob and Micah Rudosky, on Sunday in Denver. Holt and the Rudoskys missed the cut.

Chris Ward of McKinney, Texas, trails Davis by one stroke, and there are four players tied for third.

“I think I can get up there and make some noise,” Schreiner said. “I’m only six shots off the lead, which is a pretty big deficit, but if I play well, I can get close to first.”
