Free admission Monday to our parks

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will celebrate the state’s birthday by offering free admission Monday to all state parks.

The two state parks in this region are Mancos State Park, northeast of Mancos, and Navajo State Park, south of Ignacio near the New Mexico line.

Colorado gained statehood Aug. 1, 1876. Although that makes Friday the actual anniversary, the state by statute celebrates Colorado Day on the first Monday of August.

The first state park was created about 80 years after statehood, according to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. There are now 42 of them as well as 300 state wildlife areas.

Although parks entrance fees are waived Monday, activities such as fishing and camping will still require a valid license and permit.

“The preservation of beautiful places for everyone to enjoy is a uniquely American concept,” said Ken Brink, parks and outdoor recreation assistant director for Parks and Wildlife. “The outdoors is the fabric of who we are in Colorado.”
