4CornersTV reaches into Farmington

Plans include Navajo comics, coverage of racing

4CornersTV is expanding to Farmington, with coverage of local events planned with an eye on a younger demographic.

The video website – owned by Ballantine Communications Inc., parent company of The Durango Herald – debuted in February with a focus on Durango news, events, people and lifestyles.

“With Farmington having a much larger population than here, we think it’s time to expand,” said Ballantine Communications CEO Doug Bennett.

4CTV will debut in Farmington in early August with “In the Neighborhood,” a show that features people, places and events in the community. “Local Roundup,” a brief newscast, will follow, Bennett said.

The website has seen traffic spike for Farmington-related videos covering topics such as motorcross and stock-car racing, Bennett said.

San Juan County, New Mexico, had 126,503 residents in 2013, according to a Census Bureau estimate. That’s more than twice the population of La Plata County, 53,284.

4CTV will have an office in downtown Farmington that it will share with Directory Plus, another Ballantine Communications property.

“We’re doing our best to create a local business,” Bennett said.

4CTV also will feature local talent in Farmington, such as James and Ernie, a Navajo comedy duo.

The website has seen some success in growing the 25- to 45-year-old audience, Bennett said. It seeks to grow new and younger audiences than the traditional print newspaper.

Recent 4CTV episodes feature the new restaurant Grassburger, spray tanning and a 30-day CrossFit regimen.

The Farmington shows will have their own home on www.4cornerstv.com.
