14 Durango Aerospace members enjoy title

The winning team celebrates its International Space Settlement Design Competition world title Monday in Florida. It was the sixth time the Durango group has been part of the winning team.

Months of hard work and sweat by students and those surrounding the team paid off big-time this week for the Durango Aerospace Design Team.

The 14 local team members were part of a larger combined team that ended up champions Monday at the World Finals of the International Space Settlement Design Competition at Kennedy Space Center on Florida’s east coast.

Durangoans also swept the individual awards. Jocelyn Zemach was best female presenter, Ben Wilbur was best male presenter, and Haakon Sigurslid was best student leader.

It was the sixth time in the last 14 years that Durango students participated with the winning squad at the annual competition. This year the goal was to design a settlement on the moon.

Durango team members: Mallory Byrd, Joe Genualdi, Ben Wilbur, Mariah Dorsey, Emma Greenberg, Cord Arnold, Bella Bussian, Shaylah Wood, Jocelyn Zemach, Jesse Rubenstein, Patrick Leach, Haakon Sigurslid, Charlie Greenberg and Elle Rathbun.

Sponsors were Steve Powell, Dave Greenberg and Jay Rubenstein. The teacher and coach of the team was Dan Garner.
