City Market fruits recalled

Peaches, other fruits recalled July 19

No one is known to have gotten sick from peaches, plums, plumcots and nectarines that might have been contaminated with listeria monocytogenes and were recalled from regional stores including Durango’s two City Markets.

Wawona Packing Co. of Cutler, California, voluntarily recalled certain lots of fruits packed between June 1 and July 12 because products might be contaminated, according to a news release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall was issued July 19, and the standard procedure is for stores to immediately pull the fruits from their floors. Wawona notified retailers of the specific lot numbers being recalled, the FDA said. No illnesses have been linked to the recall.

Those who purchased the recalled fruit and use a City Market card get a notice on their next receipt, said Kelli McGannon, spokeswoman for King Soopers and City Market.

“Any time we have a potential risk like this, we do a recall,” she said Thursday.

Listeria has caused specific concern among the public after a contamination in 2011 from a Rocky Ford cantaloupe packing plant in southeast Colorado led to 33 deaths. It is of most concern to pregnant women and to those with a weakened immune system.

“By taking the precautionary step of recalling product, we will minimize even the slightest risk to public health, and that is our priority,” Brent Smittcamp, president of Wawona Packing Co., said in the FDA news release.

Food-safety experts say the best method of protection against food poisoning is to wash products thoroughly, and cook meat, poultry and eggs thoroughly. Avoid raw milk and unpasteurized juices. Promptly refrigerate leftovers.
