Durango BMX gears up for state championships

The road to the state BMX finals goes through Durango.

Durango BMX hosted a state qualifier race July 27 and placed six riders on the podium with four winners.

There were 107 total riders.

“Things went perfectly,” Durango BMX track operator Greg Deem said. “We had a lot of very positive feedback on Facebook and in emails. They said it was one of the best races in the state.”

Ethan Deem won the novice 5-and-under category, Hayden Dubit won the novice 8 category, Adam Short won the expert 15 category, and Chrisotpher Blevins won the expert 17-18 category.

“All the Durango kids did really well. Any time you can watch Chris Blevins race on a BMX track, it’s worth doing,” Greg Deem said.

CJ Holmes was third in the novice 6 category, and Braeden Short was third in the expert 11.

Riders need to race in at least 10 local races and four state-qualifier races in addition to the state final race Aug. 24 in Grand Junction.

The final race is weighed heavier than the rest, but all of the qualifiers are important.

“People are traveling all over the state to do these races,” Greg Deem said. “You have to do well in all of the races.”
