You can put umbrellas away, for now

Warm and dry days settling in
Pedestrians cross College Drive through steam created from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge train as rain showers moved through the region Thursday morning. Clear skies are in Southwest Colorado’s forecast for the weekend.

Umbrellas in the area have gotten a welcome workout over the past several days, but it’s looking like warm, sunny days for the next week.

“The storm that led to the flash-flood watch is already effectively gone,” said Chris Cuoco, a meteorologist with the Grand Junction office of the National Weather Service, at about 8 p.m. today.

The gauge at the Durango-La Plata County Airport measured 0.27 inches as of 8 a.m. Thursday, while an in-town gauge measured 0.23 inches. There was only a trace of rain at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.

But now the umbrellas can go back in the closet. If there is any more rain from this front, it’s more likely to fall at higher altitudes in the San Juan Mountains, Cuoco said.

Instead, we’re in for some pretty perfect summer days, he said, with highs in the low to mid-80s and lows in the mid-50s.

“It looks like dry and a high-pressure system through Thursday,” he said, “then there’s a possibility for storms next weekend. But it looks like it’s going to hit northern Colorado harder than southern Colorado, so it’s probably not going to be the kind of storm that ruins the last weekend before the kids start school.”

Because we’re talking about the weather, that forecast could change.

“It’s pretty far out,” Cuoco said.
