Bayfield resident named board member for Region 9

Sanders

The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado announced Tuesday that J.J. Sanders will join the agency’s board of directors, according to a Region 9 news release.

Sanders retired to Bayfield after a 40-year career with Lucent Technology (AT&T) in Oklahoma.

After moving to Bayfield in 2007, Sanders worked at Mercy Regional Medical Center and Annie’s Orphans.

He currently serves as Bayfield Town Trustee and will be representing the town of Bayfield on the Region 9 board.

Sanders enjoys learning more about town government as well as Region 9 and how he can make a difference, the release said.

“What I want to do is try to change the attitude of the people,” he said referring to residents who stand back and don’t participate in town government. “They need to come to these meetings, step on my toes and tell me what they think.”

Sanders expressed dissatisfaction with social media outlets because you can’t “rub elbows” with your fellow neighbors, he said.

In layman’s terms, he wants Bayfield residents – especially the younger generations – to get involved with their community and speak out for the issues they want addressed.

“Get up there and say your peace, you aren’t going to hurt my feelings,” he said. “I’m an elected official.”

Region 9 is a public/private partnership that promotes and coordinates economic development efforts in five Colorado counties. The Region 9 board of directors is comprised of representatives from the 17 local governmental jurisdictions and nine members from the private sector. The next board meeting will be Sept. 25.
