Carpenter builds a victory in the rain

American Robin Carpenter won the 105-mile second stage of the USA Pro Challenge from Aspen to Mount Crested Butte on Tuesday after the race was interrupted by a downpour. Race officials halted the competition for about five minutes after heavy rain created dangerous road conditions on the descent from Kebler Pass just outside Crested Butte. Carpenter, who races for Hincapie Sportswear Development, had a 45-second lead when the race was halted and was given a 45-second head start after it resumed. He held off Boulder’s Alex Howes of Garmin-Sharp by six seconds for his first career win. Howes, who also finished second in the first stage, claimed the tour leader’s yellow jersey heading into Stage 3, a 96-mile ride from Gunnison to Monarch Mountain.
