Durango assistant golf coach leapfrogs to Fort Lewis job

Kermitt Barrett named Skyhawks’ associate head coach
“It’s good to have Kermitt (Barrett) as part of the coaching staff,” Fort Lewis College men’s and women’s golf head coach Guy Begay said. “He’s been doing a great job at the high school level, and I’m looking forward to working with him as he transitions his skills to the college team.”

Fort Lewis College has two golf teams for the first time in history, so they needed an extra coach on hand.

Two weeks after naming Guy Begay the new head coach of the men’s and women’s golf programs, FLC announced Kermitt Barrett as the new associate head coach.

Barrett previously served as an assistant for the Durango High School boys and girls golf programs.

“It’s good to have Kermitt as part of the coaching staff,” Begay said in a news release. “He’s been doing a great job at the high school level, and I’m looking forward to working with him as he transitions his skills to the college team.”

While coaching underneath Kirk Rawles at DHS, Barrett helped lead the DHS girls team to the state tournament, as well as a boys regional championship in 2013.

“Kermitt’s background and knowledge of the game will be an absolute asset to our golf programs,” FLC athletic director Gary Hunter said in the news release. “We are excited to have him join our team and grow both programs.”

Barrett has worked at Tosch&Associates advertising agency since 2001. He graduated from FLC in 1997 and worked for Durango’s CBS television affiliate, KREZ, for two years as an account executive. He then served as the station’s sales manager for another two years.

With some of the men’s and women’s tournaments being scheduled on the same days in different locations, Barrett will lead the Skyhawks whenever Begay is elsewhere.

“As a third generation alumnus of Fort Lewis College, I’ve always rooted for FLC,” Barrett said in the news release. “Now I’m looking forward to the opportunity of working with Guy (Begay) to help launch the women’s golf program and further the men’s team. It’s an exciting time for golf in Durango.”
