What can Aztec, DHS do for us?

Bayfield football will get its first look at its 2014 squad in Durango scrimmage

Competence will be the top priority for the Bayfield High School football team in the Wolverines’ first scrimmage of the year.

BHS will meet up with Aztec High School and Durango High School at 5 p.m. Friday at DHS for its first non-practice action of the season.

“I’m looking for, as far as the whole team, just being able to be competent and execute our plays offensively and defensively,” BHS head coach Gary Heide said Thursday night. “We want to get by the mental part of the game and make sure that we know everything and are aggressive and that we know the system we’re going to be presenting on the field a week later.”

BHS will open its regular season against Kirland Central High School on Aug. 29 in Kirtland, New Mexico.

The Wolverines finished the 2013 season 5-4 and missed the Class 2A playoffs for the first time since 2008.

“We’ve been at it a little bit,” Heide said. “We had two camps in July and have been at it a little bit all summer.”

DHS went 8-3 last season and made the Class 4A playoffs for the first time in four years. The Demons are in head coach David Vogt’s second season after sending four seniors to Fort Lewis College to continue their playing careers.

Aztec went 4-6 in New Mexico’s Class 4A last year and did not make the postseason.

“I think the benefit is that we can find out, project where our players will be for the following week and how well our players do perform against another team,” Heide said. “You only see them in practice and hope they do well. Now we can really evaluate where they’re at and what they can do for our team.”
