Lightning zaps Durango police radios

The storm that blew through Friday evening did more than deliver thunder and rain – a lightning strike took out the Durango Police Department’s communications tower on Smelter Mountain.

“We have a lot of redundancies,” said Lt. Ray Shupe, with the department. “We switched to (very high frequency) in our cars and passed out handheld radios we keep stored at the DPD, so everybody could communicate.”

Did it give criminals a chance to run wild?

“It’s not really affecting our abilities that much,” he said. “We’re just doing things a little differently.”
