BHS lines up in the ... SHOTGUN!?

Bayfield kicks the tires on new offense

A new-look offense debuted for the Bayfield High School football team Friday night in a scrimmage with Aztec and Durango at Durango High School.

BHS quarterback Kelton McCoy took nearly all of the snaps form the shotgun formation, and there were players in motion before most plays.

“I think we have a lot of athletes that are good athletes, and no one in particular shines out, so basically trying to spread the ball out a little more and get the ball to other people, as well,” BHS head coach Gary Heide said after the scrimmage. “We feel we have some more mature and more upperclassmen athletes, and we’re trying to get the ball in their hands and do things that way.”

The Wolverines are trying to operate at a higher tempo than the last season and put the ball in the air more than they’re used to.

That’s just fine with McCoy.

“We’ve been opening up our pass game, so our running game won’t really be up the middle, up the middle, up the middle like it was last year,” said McCoy, son of Derek and Loreca McCoy. “We’re mixing a lot of stuff in there, trying to get some different looks.

“I’m extremely excited. We’ve got some guys who can catch the ball and can run. I’m gonna try to get the ball to them as much as I can.”

BHS senior receiver Colter McMenimen made the best catch of the night with a leaping one-handed grab against Aztec’s defense.

“That was a good catch,” McCoy said of his teammate. “If we can do that every game and help me out like that, it’s good to have.”

That’s not to say BHS made a seamless transition.

The Wolverines struggled with the center/quarterback exchange from the shotgun early, as the rain came down.

Lightning delayed the start of the scrimmage by a half hour before Bayfield’s defense lined up against Durango’s offense to open the proceedings.

“Starting out on defense, we looked really good,” said McMenimen, son of Missy and Todd McMenimen. “First series on offense, we started looking good, and then as the day went on, our offense started to struggle more and more – little mistakes on our offensive line, slot and receivers blocking. It’s stuff we can clean up.”

Starting senior lineman Zane Westbrook left the BHS sideline late in the scrimmage to get his left knee checked out by trainers. He returned on crutches with it wrapped in an ice pack, but Heide said it was just a sprain and expects him to play in their season opener Friday at Wolverine Country Stadium.

The Wolverines will open the regular season at 7 p.m. against Kirtland Central High School. BHS missed the playoffs last year after reaching the postseason in the previous four years; the Wolverines won’t settle for anything less than a return trip this season.

“Right after we found out we weren’t in the playoffs, we hit the weight room all winter, all spring, all summer,” McCoy said. “We’re gonna be hungry this year, ready for more.”
