Bayfield and Piedra Vista play 5 per usual

Panthers nip the Wolverines in a tighe season opener at BHS

It was the typical Bayfield and Piedra Vista volleyball match, which is to say it went five games, “it was a great start to the season,” and “it was really fun,” Bayfield High School head coach Terene Foutz said.

Piedra Vista, the Class 4A New Mexico runner-up from a year ago that now plays Class 5A volleyball south of the Colorado border, beat Bayfield High School 25-14, 24-26, 25-21, 23-25, 16-14 on Tuesday night at BHS in the Wolverines’ season opener. The two teams twice played five-game matches one year ago.

“We played really well,” Foutz said. “I was pleased with our performance.”

Kirstie Hillyer led BHS with 22 kills, while Emily Bauer had nine and Caitlin Phelps and Jesse Roukema each had seven.

Maddi Foutz had 21 digs and a 2.8 serve-receive average.

“It was just a great experience (Tuesday night),” said coach Foutz after the Wolverines opened the season in front of a full house. “It’s going to be a fun season.”

Class 3A Bayfield will play at Class 4A Durango at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Demons’ home- and regular-season opener.

“We’ve got a great look heading into Thursday’s match,” Foutz said.
