DHS takes the steam out of Steamboat

With a little help from SpongeBob SquarePants, the Durango Demons have won two boys golf tournaments in a row.

Cameron Barnhardt and Cy Spicer both used their Wilson-brand SpongeBob SquarePants golf balls to counter the spin on a wet Devil’s Thumb Golf Club course in Delta, and the devil proved to be in that detail.

Both shot career highs, and Durango High School backed up its team win Thursday in Pagosa Springs with another tournament victory Wednesday in Delta.

“This was our best showing of the year, especially with this field,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said. “Steamboat (Springs) is a pretty deep team; we stepped up and let them know we are going to be contenders.”

Durango shot a 220 to beat Steamboat Springs by three strokes.

Barnhardt finished second at 2-under par 70, one stroke behind medalist Hayden Plewe of Montezuma-Cortez.

Spicer shot a 74.

Cory Gillespie shot a 76 for the Demons’ 220.

Daniel McElwain and Erik Walker followed with an 81 and 84, respectively, for the Demons’ varsity.

Lucas Robbins, playing from the same tees as the varsity, shot an 83 for DHS and won the junior varsity tournament.

Nick Roberts (88), Kyle Pritchard (90), Dillon Hoselton (91), Kobe Szura (91) and Blake Martin (93) rounded out the Demons’ gem in Delta.

“I’m really excited for Cameron, because he played No. 1 against Hayden, and he went toe-to-toe; that’s going to be really beneficial to him,” said Rawles, whose team will add a talented Grand Junction to the mix in a 16-team tournament Thursday at Cobble Creek Golf Course.

“We’ll see if we can back it up (Thursday),” Rawles said.
