Guv names new Archuleta County judge

Cassidy

Gov. John Hickenlooper appointed former state senator and Colorado Lt. Gov. Samuel H. Cassidy to be the next Archuleta County judge.

Cassidy will take the bench Jan. 13, 2015, upon the retirement of Judge James E. Denvir.

Cassidy was one of three finalists out of a field of seven candidates for the position, along with Gayle O. Dixon and Deborah R. Schulte.

Currently a professor at the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business, Cassidy has taught business law and ethics there since 2000. In mid-August, when he was announced as a finalist for the position, he said he would step down as a professor after the fall quarter if appointed.

Before teaching at DU, Cassidy was president and CEO of the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry and the Jefferson County Development Association. He was also chairman of the Economic Development Council of Colorado.

Cassidy served Senate District 6 as its senator from 1991 to 1994, including two years as the senate minority leader from 1992 to 1994 and one year as lieutenant governor from 1994 to 1995.

He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma in 1975. He lived in Pagosa Springs, where he practiced law, until the mid-1990s, and has been living there part time since 2011.
