Raising a goat no easy chore

A girl with a prize-winning goat at the La Plata County Fair this year recently met the people who bought the market animal.

La Plata Electric Association board members took a moment to chat with Holli Timmerman, 10, whose 98-pound Boer goat Clark they bought for $8 a pound.

The board traditionally buys a fair animal for slaughter and donates the meat to charity. This year the arrangement fell through, so the board returned the goat through the fair board’s buy-back program.

Holli has money for next year’s project and LPEA is out the difference between the $784 it paid for Clark and the market value of the animal that the buy-back program offers.

Holli, a fourth-grader at Park Elementary School, said the money from the sale of Clark would be used to buy a goat for next year and for the feed the animal will consume.

Asked what she learned from raising Clark, Holli said: “I learned that it was a lot of work.”

She is the daughter of Drew and Abby Timmerman. He is the LPEA network administrator.
