BHS beats the turf for a W

BAYFIELD

Rumors of a Wolverines’ spread offense were greatly exaggerated.

The Bayfield High School football team lined up under center with three men in the backfield and pounded Kirtland Central into submission 48-6 on Friday night at Wolverine Country Stadium in Bayfield.

BHS (1-0) racked up 265 rushing yards and started a running clock with 10 minutes, 2 seconds left when junior running back Zane Phelps found the endzone for the second time.

The Wolverines didn’t forsake the forward pass, however.

BHS junior quarterback Kelton McCoy completed 8-of-13 passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns and ran one in himself.

“Even though we want to be run-orientated, and we do want to be a wing-T, power running team, we know that with our work we had this past summer and the maturity level that has risen in our skill players that we can execute that phase of the game,” BHS head coach Gary Heide said.

BHS didn’t have to throw a pass with its starting offense for the game’s final 20 minutes. McCoy and the starters watched the final drive from the bench with the clock running.

“It felt good, especially coming off a disappointing game last year,” said Phelps, son of Dion and Koel Phelps. “It was awesome to get started out good.”

Phelps led the Wolverines with 29 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

He also caught two passes for 14 yards and completed a pass for 18 yards.

Unlike most of last season, however, Phelps didn’t have to carry the entire offense.

BHS junior running back Brody McGhehey carried the ball 10 times for 58 yards and scored Bayfield’s first two touchdowns on wide left sweeps.

“The outside blocking was what turned it on, and our O-line did a stellar job up front to start off the game,” said McGhehey, son of Rob and Robin McGhehey.

His two touchdown runs put BHS up 14-6 with 6:50 remaining in the first quarter.

BHS junior receiver Taed Heydinger led the Wolverines with three catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Kirtland Central (0-1) scored on a 76-yard run from Keishaun Aspaas but never ran a play on Bayfield’s side of the field.

“A lot of running all week getting in shape. We worked hard, everyone wants to fly around out there,” Phelps said. “That’s how we do it.”

The Wolverines didn’t start a drive outside of Broncos’ territory until there were less than 10 minutes in the second quarter.

BHS put on a show for its fans, and that memory will have to sustain them, because the Wolverines don’t play again at home until Oct. 3 against Gunnison for ther homecoming game.

“To go on the road for four weeks, you’ve gotta have confidence, gotta have heart,” Heide said. “We’re gonna have to play at the same level we did (Friday night) to win any game in our league.”

The Wolverines will play three consecutive non-confernece road games before jumping into Western Slope-South League play.

They will match up with Shiprock at 7 p.m. Friday south of Colorado’s border.

“It’s good karma for the rest of the year,” McGhehey said. “You start off the year with a good game, it helps the psyche of the whole team to go hard the whole year.”
