BHS slugs a .347 in a sweep at Cortez

Bayfield High School head coach Terene Foutz has been around the volleyball; she’s also the Four Corners Volleyball Club director/founder.

On Tuesday at Montezuma-Cortez, she saw something she hasn’t seen in she doesn’t know how long.

“The thing I’m most proud of is our team’s attack efficiency,” Foutz said after the Wolverines swept the Panthers in three games – 25-18, 25-18, 25-18. “We hit a .347; that’s a big number. That’s something I haven’t seen in a long time.”

Kirstie Hillyer led the BHS attack with 16 kills. Jesse Roukema added nine, and Maddi Foutz had 12 digs, seven kills and three service aces.

“We took advantage of a quick offense,” Foutz said. “We worked the corners.”

Foutz attributed Panthers’ stars Laurel Chappel and Naomi Pennecoose for keeping the home team in the game, “but in the end, we found some holes and took advantage of that.”

Bayfield (2-1) next will play four matches at the Lewis-Palmer tournament this weekend in Monument, including a match against Class 4A defending champion Lewis-Palmer.

“We’re working hard,” the Class 3A BHS head coach said. “We’ve got a big task ahead of us. We’ve got to be mentally tough and fight back.

“This will be good for my team.”
