Durango second after first day of SWL tourney

Gillespie ties for 4th in varsity field; Robbins wins the JV tournament

After Day 1 of the Southwestern League Championships, the Durango Demons are in good position.

Durango High School finished second Tuesday at Black Canyon Golf Club in Montrose with a 225 team score, five strokes behind Grand Junction. Montrose is two strokes back of the DHS boys golf team.

Fruita Monument, backed by medalist Troy Dangler’s 2-under-par 68, is fourth at 232, while Montezuma-Cortez is fifth at 236.

“We’re right in the hunt,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said.

Cory Gillespie shot a 74 to tie for fourth Day 1 of the two-day league tournament, and Demons’ Erik Walker (75), Cameron Barnhardt (76) and Cy Spicer (76) all closely followed their teammate across the finish line.

Daniel McElwain shot an 84 for the Demons’ varsity.

“To have four players, not just in the 70s but the low 70s, then trending toward the low 70s, is really solid,” Rawles said.

“They look at that 76 and are kinda bummed out by it, because they know they left a few strokes out there.”

DHS shot 1-over par on the back 9 at Black Canyon.

“There are a lot of good signs going on right now,” Rawles said.

The DHS junior varsity team won the JV tournament with 252 strokes and tied the Montezuma-Cortez varsity for the fifth-best round of the day.

Lucas Robbins, who shot a 39 on the front 9, won the JV tournament with an 82. Robbins was followed by DHS teammates Kobe Szura (84), Kyle Pritchard (86), Blake Martin (86) and Nick Roberts (87).

“(Wednesday) is a really tough test,” Rawles said of Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose. “Bridges ... is a stiff test.”
