Durango YAFL team improves to 3-0 with a dominant shutout

The sixth-grade Durango Demons’ Youth American Football League team checked all three phases off in the first quarter alone.

Durango (3-0) scored on an interception return, a punt return and a rushing touchdown in the first quarter of its 41-0 shutout over the Farmington Ducks on Saturday.

Gage Mestas started the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run.

Ty Martinez returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown. (Jordan Woolverton passes to Kyler Reimers for the extra point.)

And Woolverton returned a punt 44 yards for a touchdown. (Woolverton passes to Cal Walsh for the extra point.)

While the Demons’ defense held the Ducks to just one first down in the second quarter, Woolverton threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Solomon Gabel, then added the extra point on the ground for a 27-0 halftime lead.

Haezen Mestas started the second half with a 16-yard touchdown run, and Gage Mestas passed to Walsh for the extra point.

Thomas Barnes, on his first carry of the game, opened the fourth quarter with a 26-yard touchdown run, and Niko Martinez coverted the extra point for the final margin of victory.

Barnes and Reimers led the Demons’ dominating defense with seven tackles each. Ty Martinez had two interceptions.

Durango will host undefeated Pagosa Springs at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.

The fifth-grade Durango Demons (1-2) lost 13-7 to Bayfield, their second consecutive loss after the starting the season with a win. Durango will host the Farmington Bandits at 3 p.m. Saturday at Miller.

The third- and fourth-grade Durango Demons did not report statistics from Saturday’s games. The third-graders will host the Bloomfield Bobcats at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller, while the fourth-graders will host Pagosa Springs at 5 p.m. Saturday at Miller.

The second-grade Demons improved to 2-0 with a 33-0 shutout at Bloomfield.

Linkin Griego rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, and Malakai Baier, Wyatt Bartel and Cole Pontine, who added 50 yards rushing, all scored one touchdown each.

Cully Feeney rushed for three extra points.

Defensively, Connor Jones had two fumble recoveries, and Elija McGrady led the Demons with five tackles.

Durango will play the Farmington Scorpions at 3 p.m. Saturday at Farmington.
