Grizzlies know their way around Adams State

The nation’s best dominates FLC and the field at its home meet

Adams State is ranked first in the nation in Division II men’s cross country.

Adams State is ranked second in the nation in Division II women’s cross country.

The final results at the Grizzlies’ Joe Vigil Open at Adams State College on Saturday in Alamosa reflected those high marks.

Adams State finished 1-2-3-4-5 in the men’s race for a perfect 15.

Adams State finished 1-2-3-4-6 in the women’s race for a first-place 16.

Fort Lewis College finished fourth of four men’s teams Saturday in Alamosa, while the FLC women’s cross country team finished fifth of six teams.

Kevin Batt won the men’s 10-kilometer, 6-mile race in 25 minutes, 20 seconds, then was followed by Matthew Daniels (25:27), defending Division II national champion Tabor Stevens (25:35), Jack Espeset (25:40) and Julian Florez (25:49).

Daniel Vavrik of Colorado Mesa and Jacob Lozano of Eastern New Mexico managed to squeeze themselves in the top 10 before the Grizzlies’ B-team flushed the finish line with their second five in a row.

Christian Gering led FLC with a 10th-place finish (three of the Grizzlies’ second five were open runners) in 26:39.

Lauren Martin won the women’s 5K, 3.1-mile race in 17 minutes, 42 seconds, then was followed by teammates Maura O’Brien in 18:07, Jenna Thurman in 18:26 and Melissa Roberts in 18:33.

Michaela Johnson of West Texas A&M finished fifth in 18:35.

Kelsey Corbin was the final Grizzlies’ varsity finisher in 18:44, then she was followed across the finish line by four more Grizzlies teammates.

Maddie Kruger finished the collegiate race – open runners aside – in 13th place in 19:19 as the Skyhawks’ top finisher.

Also for the FLC men: Tate Lagasca finished 19th in 27:37; Joey Brenner 20th in 27:50; Michael Walker 22nd in 28:05; Derek Laue 23rd in 28:12; and Joseph Spinelli (28:19) and William Scoggins (28:25) in 24th and 25th place, respectively.

Also for the FLC women: Emily White finished 16th in 19:46; Emily Bryant 20th in 20:02; Alexis Work 24th in 20:09; Madeigh Winsor 26th in 20:18; and Katherine Judge (20:36) and Kristen Ascenscio (21:03) in 30th and 31st place, respectively.

Colorado Mesa was top-ranked Adams State’s closest competitor in the men’s field, 41 points back in second place.

Eastern N.M. finished third with 89 points, five points ahead of FLC.

Colorado Mesa finished second in the women’s race, as well, with 78 points, 52 points behind the second-ranked Grizzlies.

Eastern N.M. finished third with 87 points, West Texas A&M with 93 points, FLC with 99 points and Garden City Community College with 169 points.
