The Durango High School volleyball team gained all the confidence it needed before a big road trip to Denver next weekend.
The DHS Demons (4-1) finished play in a four-game tournament in Delta with two more wins Saturday, giving the team four victories in two days.
DHS opened Saturday morning with a 3-0 win (25-8, 25-9, 25-9) against Kennedy, winning each set in convincing fashion.
The Demons kept the hot streak going into the final game of the tournament with a 3-0 win against Wheat Ridge, winning 25-8, 25-15 and 25-14.
DHS didn’t drop a set all weekend.
“I think we played well to earn those wins; nobody gave it to us,” DHS head coach Colleen Keresey said of the competition in Delta. “Anytime we were challenged, we kind of rose to the occasion. We had no letdowns at all, and that shows in the scores of the games.”
Against Kennedy, Logan Clark led DHS with 14 assists, and Addison Swift had 10 more. Sarah Lawton had eight digs, and Ali Davis had eight kills. All three of the DHS middles – Raven Fallon-Cyr, Lia Henriksen and Laura Lieb – had five kills.
Clark had another 13 assists against Wheat Ridge, and Davis and Lawton each had seven digs. Davis led the team with seven kills, and the Demons combined for 12 team aces.
“We served the ball really, really well,” Keresey said. “We also eliminated unforced errors.”
DHS will open play in the Cherry Creek tournament Friday, where they will see a few Class 5A teams and more quality 4A schools.
“It definitely will be a step up in competition,” Keresey said. “We are excited to see how we can do against Front Range schools, and it was good to get wins under our belt and build confidence.”
