Durango-area woman treated after standoff

A standoff ended Thursday with a woman being taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center after apparently swallowing pills.

The incident began about noon Thursday at a house in a wooded lot in the 4800 block of Florida Road (County Road 240), northeast of Durango.

The woman was arguing with her ex-husband, with whom she shares the residence, when she fired multiple shots from a handgun, said Dan Bender, spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

The gunshots resulted in no injuries. The man fled the residence, while the woman retreated inside, Bender said.

The standoff ended when a Farmington Police Department robot entered the residence at about 4:30 p.m., finding the woman lying on a bathroom floor, Bender said. She had apparently swallowed pills.

A sheriff’s office SWAT team then entered the house and carried the woman to waiting medics, who took her to the hospital, Bender said.

Authorities did not release either the woman or the man’s name. Her condition was unknown.

“The investigation is really only now beginning,” Bender said. “While charges may be pending, it’s too early to sort it out.”
