How would you like to be a film critic?

Locals invited to screen shorts in global festival

Forget hoity-toity judges talking about “the cinema.” Who cares what the glossy folks in Hollywood think? At the end of September, Durango movie lovers will have the chance to weigh in on the 10 finalists at the Manhattan Short Film Festival.

Dubbed the “World’s First Global Film Festival, its organizers are inviting audiences in more than 250 cities spanning six continents to pick their favorites for Best Actor and Best Movie. Alas, the screens in Antarctica will remain dark.

The festival received 589 shorts from 47 countries. Entries from England, Norway, Australia, the Netherlands, France, Mexico, Germany and the U.S. made the final cut.

“This festival will unite people in all corners of the globe, from Sydney to Mumbai, from Buenos Aires to Cairo,” the festivals founding director Nicholas Mason said. “Venues also include cinemas in 20 cities in the Ukraine, 40 cities in Russia and 47 states in the USA. This project is not going to cable TV or Video on Demand, it’s about communities bonding together via their local cinema.”

The winner will be announced Oct. 6.
