A left-turn lesson for drivers

Here’s how to make a left turn off Main Avenue because so many Durango drivers were never taught.

First you put on your left turn signal. Your goal is to signal your intention to turn, not to confirm what everyone can already see you are doing.

Next you smoothly glide over into the center turn lane.

Then – and only then – do you let off the gas and/or apply the brakes. Not before. This allows the long line of cars behind you not to have to stop or slow down while you make a louie. It keeps traffic flowing. In fact, it’s the entire purpose of having turn lanes.

Next week: Why the left lane is called the passing lane.
