Settling into the 6-2

Skyhawks finish Texas trip at 2-2

Four games into an entirely new offense, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team is starting to gel.

The Skyhawks split their two matches Saturday to finish their weekend trip to Kingsville, Texas, at 2-2.

They lost to Eastern New Mexico 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 26-24) and beat American International College 3-1 (set scores not immediately available).

Ashley Wells led the FLC effort in the first match with 11 kills and 10 digs for the double-double, while Ally Dell’Amico had 13 digs.

The Skyhawks had 11 blocks as a team in the first match.

“I think our blocking was pretty strong over the course of the entire weekend,” FLC head coach Kelley Rifilato said.

FLC (3-5) made a big impact in the second game from the service line.

The Skyhawks had 11 aces as a team.

Dell’Amico anchored the defense again with 20 digs and fired two aces, as well.

“She was all over the floor defensively,” Rifilato said.

Stephanie Sonka led the team with 11 kills, and Rachel Hendrick chipped in eight kills, 13 digs and two aces.

“She was just an impact player in this final match,” Rifilato said.

FLC played its third and fourth matches in its 6-2 system with two setters that it had to switch to after Heather Danny hurt her hip.

“We’re getting better and meshing altogether with the two setters,” Rifilato said.

The Skyhawks will return home for their first game of the season to open conference play at 7 p.m. Thursday against Colorado Christian inside Whalen Gymnasium.
