FLC has a tough time in Big D

FLC women’s soccer loses in OT in Dallas

Two losses in Dallas exposed the youth on the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team.

The FLC Skyhawks suffered their first two losses of the season at a tournament hosted by Dallas Baptist University. After a 4-0 loss to Angelo State on Thursday, the Skyhawks (1-2-1) finished the weekend with a 1-0 overtime loss to the host Patriots.

“Both teams we played down here are fantastic and will be at the top of their conferences this year,” said FLC interim head coach Jimmy Hall. “As far as my team goes, we are still extremely young, and it showed Thursday. (Saturday), we saw huge growth.”

Ashley Cox netted the golden goal in overtime for the Patriots just 1 minute, 47 seconds into the first overtime.

“It was just a breakdown in the defense,” Hall said. “We stepped in a little late in the midfield area, they got it to the inline and played a nice cross across goal and got on the end of it.”

The Skyhawks’ goal was under attack all game as the Patriots outshot FLC 21-9. Caitlyn Espinosa made six saves in goal for FLC.

After an up-and-down non-conference performance, the Skyhawks will begin play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Friday at Regis. They also will play Sunday at New Mexico Highlands.

“Our program will be at the top of the conference by the end of the season. I am super proud of the girls, and, other than not putting in a goal before the other team (Saturday), I couldn’t ask for any more,” Hall said.
