DHS volleyball swinging for the fences

Demons holds their own at a big 5A tournament in Denver

Five games in one day took it out of the Durango High School volleyball team.

The Demons didn’t leave the Cherry Creek tournament empty handed, though.

They won their pool with three Class 5A teams to advance to the semifinal round and finished fourth.

“That is the first time I think that’s happened at that tournament in recent memory,” DHS head coach Colleen Keresey said of the pool victory.

DHS (7-3) opened the day with a 2-1 (23-25, 25-23, 15-12) win over Rocky Mountain.

The Demons had 12 services aces as a team in the match.

Logan Clark led the team with 22 assists, and Laura Lieb had seven kills.

“That was probably the best match we’ve played all season,” Keresey said. “Our offense was running on all cylinders. We just played competitively and had fun.”

They followed that with a 2-0 (25-18, 29-27) win over Horizon.

Clark had 25 assists, Maddie Robterson collected 12 kills, and Alli Davis made five digs.

After that, DHS finished pool play undefeated with a 2-1 (14-25, 27-25, 15-13) win over Lakewood.

“We played that game right after Horizon and had a letdown in the first game,” Keresey said. “A change of heart was all that game was, believing that we can play with that big school.”

Robertson again led the team with nine kills, while Sarah Waller chipped in five.

That put the team into the championship bracket against Cherry Creek.

The Bruins won 2-0 (25-12, 25-16).

Davis paced the team with four kills.

“They’re just one of the best in the state,” Keresey said. “They showed it against us.”

Then DHS matched up with Lakewood again in the third place match. The Tigers prevailed 2-0 (25-14, 25-17).

“At that point, I think we were just exhasuted,” Keresey said. “I’m trying to focus the girls back on the winning our pool and the three games we did play very well. We learned a lot. We’re prepared for league.”

DHS hosts Piedra Vista on Tesday before entering Southwestern league play Friday at home against Grand Junction Central.
