Margins hurt BHS soccer

Early and late goals sink Wolverines

Progress has come in fits and starts this season for the Bayfield High School soccer team.

The Wolverines lost 5-1 to Telluride on Saturday at Wolverine Country Stadium.

Telluride (2-2, 2-1 Region 5) scored five minutes into the game and found the back of the net again shortly before halftime.

“The first five minutes and last five minutes of the half have been our difficulty, and it’s frustrating,” BHS head coach Dave Foster said. “We gave up a sloppy goal in the first five minutes of the half, played a good 25 minutes, 30 minutes, another goal went in, and we tend to deflate with a two-goal deficit.”

Sam Kundrik scored for BHS (1-6, 1-4 Region 5) on an assist from Viktor Sandvik.

“Really unselfish play by Viktor. He had a one on one play with the keeper,” Foster said. “He lifted his head up and saw a wide-open Sam to score.”

The Wolverines struggled with Telluride’s relatively unique 3-4-3 formation.

Most teams play a 4-4-2.

“We had to make some adjustments, but because our players are so young, we are having trouble making those changes on the field,” Foster said. “As a coach, I need to communicate that better.”

BHS also was without its leading scorer Grant Pierce, who was ineligible.

The Wolverines have, however, scored in six of their seven games and already doubled their goal output from last season.

“We’re identifying some of our strengths and weaknesses,” Foster said. “The boys are so open to learning.”

BHS next plays Saturday at Alamosa.

“We know we’re getting a lot out of these games,” Foster said. “The score does not represent how we play.”
