Three finalists, three titles.
The Durango High School boys tennis team took care of business on the final day of the Delta Invitational on Saturday in Delta, as it finished third out of eight teams in the tournament.
“It was surprising because we won three of the seven positions,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said. “The scoring of this tournament is not done the way we do regionals. Scoring in this tournament is meant to reward depth in all positions. There is no weighting.”
Fred Edwards claimed the No. 1 singles championship with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Vail Mountain.
“That was the strongest test, I think, in the tournament for Fred,” Weisfeldt said. “The kid was able to move the ball and handle Fred’s pace. He just wasn’t as consistent as Fred.”
Alijah Kalinowski beat Hotchkiss 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 for the No. 3 singles championship.
“It was the iron man match,” Weisfeldt said. “The same kid beat him Thursday. He was able to turn the tables in this match and take care of business.”
The No. 2 doubles team of Will Downs and Micah Hwang beat Montezuma-Cortez 6-4, 6-4 in the third place match.
Blaise Paige and Corbin Reiter lost 6-1, 6-4 to a Fruita Monument junior varsity team to finish fourth at No. 3 doubles.
Jake Beekman and Amon Ledger-Swenson beat Fruita JV 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 for the No. 4 doubles championship.
“We didn’t win the tournament, but the wins we got over Vail, Hotchkiss and Montrose will put us ahead of them for regional seeding,” Weisfeldt said.
DHS will host its first home match of the season at 10 a.m. Saturday against Grand Junction Central.
