Durango soccer gets back on track

Demons even SWL record with win at Fruita

After a brief malfunction, the Durango High School boys soccer team is back on track.

The Demons (6-2-1, 1-1 Southwestern League) bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Montrose (5-1-0, 2-0 SWL) on Friday with a 3-1 win against Fruita Monument on Saturday in Fruita.

“It was good to see us bounce back from a hard-fought game with Montrose and losing in a nail biter. To take care of business Saturday morning was good to see,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said.

Vance Bulen, Elijah Fenton and Tony Williams all scored goals Saturday for DHS.

The Demons have scored at least three goals in six of their nine games this year.

“The guys kind of are on this mission. They understand what they need to do and how to do it,” Parker said. “Every game is coming step-by-step, one at a time toward the state championship the guys feel like they can win.”

Even with the 1-0 loss at Montrose on Friday, Parker was excited to see the way his team competed while they earned an early opportunity to see what the Indians have to offer. Montrose is ranked No. 3 in the state, regardless of classification, on MaxPreps.com, and the Demons are No. 6.

“At the end of the road at league, it most likely will come down to the two of us at the top. We are going to be fighting for a league championship and playoff seeding,” Parker said. “It was good to see what kind of style they play and how we matchup.”

DHS will get its chance to host Montrose at home Oct. 4 at Dirks Field on the Fort Lewis College campus.

The Demons continue SWL play next weekend with a game Friday at Grand Junction Central.
