Battle of the Badges: Five-o vs. laddermen

One team took an oath of fighting crime and the other to stand up against raging flames, but on Saturday, they challenged each other on the field in the sixth annual Battle of the Badges Softball Game.

The Durango Police Department is trying to catch the Durango Fire Protection District in the overall series. The two agencies took the grass at the La Plata County Fairgrounds for a good, old-fashioned game of bomber.

“Everybody had a great time,” said Jim Spratlen, Durango’s chief of police. “I’m very proud of both sides.”

The games raise money for Durango’s Special Olympics team, which had a game of its own before the interagency match. Last year, the fundraiser brought $5,000.

So far in their six game series, Spratlen said they tied their first, and the firefighters now lead, 3 to 2.

Durango’s finest have some skills on the grass.

“There was some good field work out there,” Spratlen said.

The police won this year’s contest, 3-1.
