Skyhawks make it a four-pack in a win over No. 6

FLC men’s soccer snaps a two-game losing streak with a big win against Texas A&M International

A two-game losing streak against unranked opponents sparked the Skyhawks to their biggest win of the young season Sunday.

The 20th-ranked Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team snapped its losing streak, taking down No. 6 Texas A&M International 4-2 in Laredo, Texas.

FLC (2-2-0) was up 3-0 early, but a couple late goals by the Dust Devils cut it to 3-2. But sophomore Tamino Kroeger scored two seconds after the Dust Devils’ second goal to put the game away for good in the 87th minute.

“I am very proud of the boys,” FLC head coach Oige Kennedy said in a news release. “They reacted extremely positively after our disappointing second half on Friday.”

FLC junior midfielder Yannis Becker was the first Skyhawk to score when he got his head on a ball played in by Austin Derksen.

The first FLC loss of the season came Sept. 7 to St. Edward’s in a 1-0 game. FLC was whistled for a red card 40 minutes into that game, and Texas A&M International suffered a similar fate Sunday, incurring a red card against Joaquin Diaz just 14 minutes into the match.

The Skyhawks scored their second goal of the match in the second half when Luke Lawrence headed a ball into the back of the net after a pass from Becker. Luke Lawrence’s brother, Zac, scored the game-winning goal 19 minutes later, and it was assisted by Kroeger.

Shortly after, the Dust Devils had another man sent off with a red card, but that only seemed to fuel their attack, as Javani Macias scored on a penalty kick, and Funcia Kenneh added a second goal with just eight minutes to play in the game.

Tyler Miller assisted Kroeger on the SKyhawks’ fourth goal, just seconds after Kenneh’s goal.

FLC made a goalkeeper change Sunday, as Kennedy started Ryan Schaul ahead of Niall Burdon, who received the first three starts of the season. Schaul made two saves in the match.

“We played very well against a very good team in what is a tough place to come and win on the road” Kennedy said. “Texas A&M International is a good, experienced group that play some very attractive football. We looked strong from the start keeping the ball and controlling the tempo of the game. It was a very solid road performance.”

FLC has completed its non-conference schedule and will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Adams State.

“We will have a tough turnaround with the league season string Wednesday at Adams State on the road, but our guys are excited to get to playing some RMAC teams.”
