Motorcyclist injured trying to avoid bear

A motorcyclist took a spill Monday morning trying to avoid a bear on U.S. Highway 160, about eight miles west of Hesperus.

The accident occurred just before 9 a.m.

The motorcyclist, whose name was not released, was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center.

The motorcycle had to be towed, said Chris Anderson, chief of Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District.

Anderson said the motorcyclist, westbound on a Harley-Davidson, said she was from Florida.
