Open house to look at airport plans

The Durango-La Plata County Airport is holding a community open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Community Recreation Center to more fully acquaint the public with the airport’s 20-year master plan.

The public meeting comes days after the airport announced record passenger traffic for July and August, despite its bedraggled appearance and inadequate infrastructure.

According to a release circulated by the airport, the event will give La Plata County and Durango residents insights “into the operational demands of the airport, and evaluate potential alternatives to address current and future aviation activity.”

Airport director Kip Turner said the open house “is an opportunity for the public to come in and see where we are. In any process like this, there are times for the public to weigh in,” he said.

“Some people will agree with things, some people won’t. And that’s fine – that’s great – that’s the country we live in, and I encourage that. But this is more of an informational thing,” he said.

Earlier Thursday, the airport commission will discuss the airport’s 2015 budget.
