Champs put Wolverines on the ropes

Class 1A champion and No. 1 Paonia beats BHS

Late turnovers sealed the Bayfield High School football team’s fate against Class 1A No. 1 Paonia on Friday in Paonia.

The defending state champions Eagles intercepted Bayfield up 40-34 with BHS driving to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.

Paonia (4-0) scored twice more to put the game out of reach and drop BHS (2-2) to .500 on the season.

BHS junior running back Zane Phelps gave the Wolverines their only lead of the game on a 2-yard run in the third quarter.

Phelps finished with 30 carries for 86 yards and two touchdowns.

Paonia quarterback Taylor Walters tied the game on the next drive with a 34-yard touchdown run.

Walters scored three touchdowns on the ground and added another through the air.

The Eagles led 20-6 after the first quarter, but BHS battled back to tie the game at 27 at the half.

Paonia has won 13 in a row.

The Wovlerines were playing their third consecutive road game and have one more to go before they play at Wolverine Country Stadium again.

BHS will play Olathe at 7 p.m. Friday in Olathe.
