Wolverines shut out Monte Vista Pirates

BHS volleyball sweeps its IML opener

Efficiency characterized the Bayfield High School volleyball team’s 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-13) win over Monte Vista on Saturday in Bayfield.

The Wolverines racked up 37 kills on a .525 hitting percentage to open Intermountain League play with a win.

“Ultimately, we benefited from a lot of free balls,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said. “Our attack numbers are very good. Very low dig numbers because they weren’t returning the ball to us. Overall, a very good win for us.”

BHS (9-2, 1-0 IML) fired 13 team aces, led by senior setter Suzie Rhodes with seven.

Foutz challenged Rhodes to create a new free-ball play with every Bayfield rally, keeping consistent with the Wolverines’ plan to develop players in blowout matches.

“She had to really think on the fly to create some double quick plays to really advance our free-ball system,” Foutz said. “That was a lot of fun for the team. They got to work on a lot of combinations that we really haven’t practiced.”

BHS next will host Alamosa at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, before finishing its September schedule Sept. 30 at Pagosa Springs.
