Avalanche drop a pair to Ducks in preseason openers

Devante Smith-Pelly and the Anaheim Ducks got the best of Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche in a 5-2 comeback win in the preseason opener Monday night in Denver. Another group of Ducks beat the Avalanche 4-0 in a split squad game in Anaheim.

DENVER – Andrew Cogliano and Patrick Maroon scored 44 seconds apart in the third period, lifting the Anaheim Ducks to a 5-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche in a split-squad exhibition game Monday night.

Brad Winchester scored twice on Avs goaltender Calvin Pickard, including the tying goal early in the third period.

Cogliano gave Anaheim the lead with a wrist shot. Moments later, Maroon knocked in a loose puck near the crease. Jakob Silfverberg added a late empty-net goal.

Zach Redmond and Alex Tanguay had goals for the Avalanche. Tanguay played just 16 games last season because of hip and knee injuries.

Jason LaBarbera played the first two periods in goal for Anaheim, before he gave way to Igor Bobkov.

The other half of the rosters for both squads played Monday in Anaheim.

Ducks 4, Avalanche 0

ANAHEIM, California – Dany Heatley scored in the opening minute of his first game with the Anaheim Ducks, helping them beat Colorado 4-0 in one of two split-squad games with the Avalanche on Monday night.

Heatley, who signed to a one-year, $1-million contract after spending last season with Minnesota, skated on the top line with Corey Perry, giving center Ryan Getzlaf a 50-goal scorer on each side. Heatley accomplished the feat in back-to-back seasons with Ottawa (2005-06 and 2005-07). Perry did it in 2010-11 when he was the league’s MVP.

Brandon Bell, Ben Lovejoy and Rickard Rakelll also scored for the Ducks. Getzlaf had two assists, and Frederik Andersen made 27 saves.

Heatley and Rakell scored on Anaheim’s first two shots at Reto Berra, who finished with 26 saves.
