Osprey Packs to distribute from northern Utah

Cortez-based Osprey Packs has chosen Ogden as the Utah city where it will move its U.S. distribution center.

Osprey made the announcement Monday. It was looking to move distribution to a transportation hub, and Ogden is just 40 miles north of Salt Lake City.

Osprey said in a news release that company headquarters – which includes sales, customer service, marketing, finance, returns and other core functions – will remain in Cortez. The company, which specializes in backpacks, daypacks and hydration packs, employs about 74 people locally.

Warehousing and shipping will move into a 108,000-square-foot building in Business Depot Ogden, which is being constructed and is expected to be ready by mid-2015, Osprey said in the release.

The company believes that having a distribution center near the national rail network allows for “improved supply chain efficiencies, smaller environmental impact as well as providing access to transportation lanes that support better service to the brand’s retailer base.”

Osprey announced in June that it had chosen the Salt Lake area over Long Beach, California, Phoenix and Kansas City.

“This single roof distribution model will enable Osprey to better serve our partners as well as streamline most logistics processes,” David Dunn, operations director of Osprey Packs, said in the release. “After thoughtful consideration of all our options, the Osprey Logistics and Fulfillment team was extremely impressed with the Ogden community and the (Business Depot Ogden) park in particular.”

In recent years, the company dealt with space constraints and has patched together several smaller facilities in Cortez to keep up with demand.

Osprey said it plans to open the new distribution center with up to 20 employees, many of whom will be relocating from Colorado, and some of whom will be new hires in Utah. Osprey, which this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary, also maintains a product development office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, near the factories where it manufactures its products, and a design office in Mill Valley, California.
