FLC hopes home equals more goals

FLC sophomore midfielder Jordan Hix helped the Skyhawks with seven points on five assists and one goal as a freshman in 2013. Through six games this season, FLC has scored just three times, and Hix has been held without a point. Hix and FLC will get the chance to turn that around at home this weekend with games against CSU-Pueblo and Western State.

The scoring drought is over, and now the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team hopes to start a new streak.

After going four games without a goal, the Skyhawks got off the schneid with a 1-0 win at New Mexico Highlands on Sunday in Las Vegas, N.M. Now, the Skyhawks are ready for their return home to Dirks Field with games Friday and Sunday.

FLC (2-3-1, 1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) will host Western State (4-0-2, 1-0-1 RMAC) at 12:30 p.m. Friday and CSU-Pueblo at noon Sunday.

Western State will enter Friday’s match as one the hottest teams in the RMAC. Still undefeated, the Mountaineers sit in fourth place in the conference behind only Colorado Mines (5-0-1, 2-0 RMAC), Regis (4-1-1, 2-0 RMAC) and UC-Colorado Springs (3-3, 2-1 RMAC).

They boast the reigning RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week in Meghan Jedzrejewski, who has played every minute in goal this year and allowed just two goals. She has made 30 saves and produced five shutout victories.

Francesca Rand leads Western State with four goals.

FLC currently sits in sixth place in the conference after a loss to Regis to begin RMAC play and the win Sunday at N.M. Highlands.

Courtney Riley scored her second goal of the season in the win Sunday, and she leads FLC with five points. Carolyn Archer scored the only other FLC goal this season.

FLC goalkeeper Caitlyn Espinosa will enter the weekend allowing an average of 1.39 goals per game. She has made 19 saves, and the Skyhawks are 2-3 when she is between the posts this season.

CSU-Pueblo will enter Sunday’s game on a five-game losing streak in games against FLC and a four-game skid at Dirks Field.

Laikyn Koss leads a CSU-Pueblo attack that has seen seven players already score this season.

FLC head coach Jimmy Hall could not be reached for comment Thursday.
