DHS on Cloud 9 in Leadville

Blevins and the Demons win the Division 2 Cloud City Challenge
Christopher Blevins of Durango High School fought his way all the way from the back of the pack to win the varsity boys race at the Cloud City Challenge last weekend in Leadville. DHS retained its place atop the Division 2 standings with 2,704 points, edging host Leadville, which finished second.

Both Animas High School and Durango High School finished in the top three at the Cloud City Challenge on Sunday in Leadville, the 2014 Colorado High School Cycling League’s second race this season.

AHS finished third in the Division 1 team results with 4,835 points, while Boulder won with 5,060 points.

Boulder leads the season standings after two races.

DHS retained its place atop the Division 2 standings with 2,704 points, edging host Leadville, which finished second.

Durango’s Katja Freeburn took second in the girls varsity race in 1 hour, 33 minutes, 32 seconds.

Kelsey Lundberg of Salida beat Freeburn by 11 seconds.

Freeburn and Lundberg are tied for the series lead with 1,190 points.

Camryn Sippy of AHS, fifth in the standings, took fifth in the girls varsity race in 1:38.

Christopher Blevins of DHS fought his way all the way from the back of the pack to win the varsity boys race in 1:45:27. Blevins missed the first race of the series, forcing him to start on the back row.

Series points leader Quintin Cook of Eagle Valley took fourth in 1:47.

DHS also had three other top-25 finishers: Bryce Gordon in 10th, Gergo Hajba in 19th and Charlie Greenberg in 22nd.

Avra Saslow of AHS finished second in the girls junior varsity race in 1:06:28, with teammate Ellen Campbell fourth in 1:08:15.

Campbell ranks second in the season series standings with 1,044 points, one point behind ThunderRidge’s Camryn Kercher, who finished fifth in 1:08:57.

Ava Hachman of DHS was sixth, and Lacey Anderson of AHS wound up in 21st after fixing a flat.

Eric Brunner of Boulder won the boys Division 1 JV race in 1:23:03. He leads the overall season standings.

Kieran Eagen of AHS was fifth in 1:24:12.

Also for AHS: Quinn Haughey finished 12th, Domi Frideger took 52nd, and Perrin Kileen was 55th.

Lucas Robbins of DHS finished 13th in the boys Division 2 JV race, and Will Berger was 18th for DHS.

Ellen Duke of AHS took 12th in the girls sophomore race.

Dylan Williamson of AHS was fifth in the boys Division 1 sophomore race in 58:57. Andre Middleton took seventh, Austin Monroe 17th, Grant Gibson 28th, Coleman Bader 33rd, TJ Rifkin 46th and Geoffrey Steiner 54th for AHS.

Jimmy Pope was third and Tye Sandoval ninth for DHS in the boys Division 2 sophomore race.

Maya Zarlingo of AHS finished second in the girls freshman race.

The teams will race again Oct. 5 in Elbert at the Peaceful Valley Invitational.
