Lights, camera, Tarantino

In December, Quentin Tarantino is planning to shoot “Hateful Eight” at the Schmid Ranch on Wilson Mesa near Telluride.

When Telluride and film are mentioned in the same sentence, it’s usually in reference to the mountain town’s famous festival.

But in December, the Telluride area will be the setting for the most significant major motion picture to be filmed in Colorado in 45 years, according to the Colorado Economic Commission. Quentin Tarantino is planning to shoot “Hateful Eight” at the Schmid Ranch on Wilson Mesa.

The ranch has a La Plata County connection. Clarice Schmid, who died in 2011 in Hesperus, lived on the ranch from 1932 to 1957. Several of her descendants still live here.

To beat out Wyoming and Utah, the state gave producers a $5-million-incentive package toward the $44-milllion budget.

Alas, there’s little chance of stardom for locals. While Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Dern are set to star, the need for extras is expected to be limited.

The last film to spend that kind of money in Colorado was “True Grit.”
