FLC races middle of the flock

Skyhawks finish in the upper rungs of the Roy Griak Invitational

Both Fort Lewis College cross country squads finished in the top half of the prestegious Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday at the Les Bolstad Golf Course at the University of Minnesota.

Competing in the Maroon II race for Division II schools, the Skyhawks’ men’s team finished 10th with 301 points, and FLC’s women’s team was 13th with 384 points.

Wisconsin-Parkside won the Maroon II men’s race with 90 points, and Minnesota-Duluth won the women’s event with 74 points.

Regina’s Matt Johnson won the men’s 8-kilometer race in 25 minutes, 32.1 seconds, while Samantha Rivard of Minnesota-Duluth won the women’s 6K in 22:02.8.

FLC senior Christian Gering was the Skyhawks’ top men’s finisher, completing the course in 25th at 26:48.

Garrett Sapakoff took 34th for the Skyhawks in 27:12, Joey Brenner was 65th in 27:49, Tate Lagasca finished 76th in 28:01, William Scoggins took 101st in 28:25, Michael Walker finished 106th in 28:28, and Bayfield High School alumnus Derek Laue rounded out the team in 156th at 29:20.

Skyhawks’ freshman and Pagosa Springs alumna Emily Bryant turned in the top women’s performance for FLC in 50th place at 24:07.9.

Maddie Kruger was 63rd in 24:21, followed closely by Katherine Judge in 65th at 24:27.3 for FLC. Emily White was 74th in 24:41.9, Durango High School alumna Madeigh Winsor 132nd in 25:55.2, Alexis Work 138th in 26:01.7 and Kristen Ascencio 151st in 26:15.4 for the Skyhawks.

FLC next will run at the Metro State Invitational on Saturday at Washington Park in Denver.
