Taggers vandalize Durango neighborhood

Police requesting information on graffiti spree

It probably only took a few minutes, but a vandal or vandals who hit a Durango neighborhood with graffiti over the weekend managed to cause several thousand dollars worth of damage.

“There were seven different victims ranging from vehicles to trailers to houses,” Sgt. Robert Taylor with the Durango Police Department said. “They were all done by the same person or persons, all in black paint.”

The graffiti spree took place on Colorado Avenue off Florida Road.

“It’s usually a pretty quiet neighborhood, off the beaten path,” Taylor said. “We don’t know if someone in the neighborhood was targeted, or if it was just someone passing through.”

There is no official dollar estimate on the damage as property owners await damage appraisals from insurance agents.

“It will be several thousand dollars at least,” Taylor said.

Neighbors were speculating about gang involvement.

“We don’t know that for a fact, although the designs are consistent with a gang from New Mexico,” Taylor said. “Or it could be somebody copycatting. We don’t have any witnesses at this point. But it was somebody who knew what they were doing. I think most of them would only have taken a minute or two.”

That doesn’t mean there wasn’t some planning involved, he said.

“A lot of times, when we arrest taggers, we find a notebook with the same designs and words as they used in their graffiti,” Taylor said.

Police are asking for information from the public to help solve this crime. Call Officer David Smith at 375-4720 and leave a message.
