Science Center director leaving post

Cable says he’s leaving Durango for personal reasons
Chris Cable who migrated to Durango from Anchorage, Alaska, to take over the helm of the Powerhouse Science Center will be stepping down Oct. 31.

Powerhouse Science Center Executive Director Chris Cable is stepping down at the end of October.

Since starting in 2012, he also worked on upgrading the museum by extending the plaza, painting the smokestack and building an organic garden for educational purposes, among many other improvements.

While Cable was at the helm, the museum’s annual budget expanded by about 15 percent, and he increased the staff to deliver additional programming.

“Working with and supporting many capable and passionate staff and board members who share similar views on the vast potential of this organization,” also was on his list of accomplishments he said.

Cable also helped with the design of the new Science, Theatre, Education, Arts and Music Park that is proposed to be constructed next to the Powerhouse Science Center.

“There is tremendous synergy by bringing several local institutions into one center location – one that celebrates the river,” he said.

He also has worked on building more of a partnership with the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and started a partnership with Native Universe, a National Science Foundation grant to incorporate a Native American perspective into the museum programming.

He said it is likely he will be moving to California or Alaska to be closer to his family, and he is planning to work in a similar position.

“We want to thank Chris for his service and praise him for his valuable leadership,” said Bill Luthy, president of the Powerhouse board in a news release.

“He will leave the Powerhouse in a position for it to build on many of the achievements that he has helped to initiate,” Luthy said.

Board and staff members will work closely with Cable over the next month to ensure a smooth transition with no interruption to the services or programs at the science center.

Brett Cadwell, Powerhouse director of finance, will serve as interim executive director until the board begins searching for a new executive director in 2015.
