A lesson in left-turn etiquette

Here’s how and how not to make a left turn from a county two-lane, especially highways 550 or 160. Drivers subconsciously begin slowing a half-mile or longer from their driveway. This frequently causes cars behind them to bunch up. Sometimes, one in the rear will decide to try and pass this clump of cars doing 10 to 15 mph below the limit for no apparent reason. Instead, maintain your speed until it’s time to actually make your turn.

Use your signal before slowing, not after numerous cars and trucks clumped up behind you prevent one at the rear from seeing it. If there is no oncoming traffic, a considerate driver will pull into the oncoming lane and complete their left from there, allowing the cars behind him or her to continue along in the right lane without slowing.

Signaling and showing a little courtesy on the roads goes a long way in preventing accidents. It also lets everyone else get home a little sooner.
